This practice dates back to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who had the habit of repeating this phrase when he performed salat al-fajr (the morning prayer) and salatul tasleem (the evening prayer). In fact, he did this every day.
In addition to being an excellent way to start each day, saying subhanallah 100 times is one of the most effective means of purifying our souls from sins. As the Prophet ﷺ mentioned: whoever repeats this phrase 100 times in a day will see their sins erased.
Why say subhanallah al alhamdulillah allahu akbar 33 times?
The Messenger ﷺ had the habit of saying after each prayer: 33 times Subhan Allah. Then he would say 33 times Al Hamdullilah and 33 times Allahu Akbar. And he concluded his prayer by saying: La ilha Illallahi Wadahu la Charika lahu lahu I mulku wa lahu I hamd wa Huwa ala kulli chay'in Qadîr. (There is no one worthy of worship except Allah, there is no one like Him. To Him belongs what is in the heavens and what is on the earth, and Allah is sufficient as the decider of affairs).
