Ar-Rahmān (الرَّحْمَٰن), "The Most Merciful," is one of the most majestic Names of Allah — so majestic that an entire chapter of the Quran bears His name. It designates He whose mercy is the very essence: an immense compassion that precedes creation, encompasses it entirely, and reaches the believer and the disbeliever alike, mankind and the smallest of creatures.
What Does Ar-Rahmān Mean?
The name Ar-Rahmān comes from the Arabic root rā-hā-mīm (ر ح م), which evokes mercy, tenderness and kindness. Its intensive form expresses a fullness that the English language struggles to translate. Applied to Allah, this Name designates:
- A mercy of essence: Ar-Rahmān is not merely "He who shows mercy" — mercy is His permanent attribute, inseparable from His being.
- A universal mercy: it embraces all creation, without condition of faith or merit — the rain falls, the heart beats, sustenance comes for all.
- A Name reserved for Allah: unlike "rahīm," which can qualify a man, none can be called "ar-Rahmān" except Allah.
Ar-Rahmān in the Qur'an
Surah 55 opens with this Name and unfolds, verse after verse, the blessings of the All-Merciful:
الرَّحْمَٰنُ عَلَّمَ الْقُرْآنَ
« The All-Merciful. He has taught the Qur'an. » (Surah Ar-Rahmān, 55:1-2)
The first blessing mentioned is neither rain nor sustenance: it is the Qur'an itself — revelation is the act of mercy par excellence. Allah also says:
قُلِ ادْعُوا اللَّهَ أَوِ ادْعُوا الرَّحْمَٰنَ ۖ أَيًّا مَّا تَدْعُوا فَلَهُ الْأَسْمَاءُ الْحُسْنَىٰ
« Say: "Call upon Allah, or call upon Ar-Rahmān. Whichever names you call upon Him by, He has the Most Beautiful Names." » (Surah Al-Isrā', 17:110)
Throughout Surah Ar-Rahmān, this refrain recurs: « Which, then, of the blessings of your Lord will you deny? » (55:13) — repeated thirty-one times, like an insistent reminder that everything, around us and within us, is a trace of His mercy.
Living with Ar-Rahmān in daily life
1. Seeing mercy before severity
He who knows Ar-Rahmān looks at the world differently: health, sleep, daily bread, rain — nothing is owed, everything is a gift. This reading of reality transforms complaint into gratitude and nourishes a deep love for the Creator.
2. Becoming oneself a bearer of mercy
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Those who show mercy, the All-Merciful (Ar-Rahmān) shows them mercy." (reported by At-Tirmidhī). The believer who lives this Name softens his character: he forgives, visits the sick, maintains family ties — these ties (rahim) that the prophetic tradition precisely connects to the Name of the All-Merciful.
3. Seeking the love that Ar-Rahmān places in hearts
Allah says: "Those who believe and do righteous deeds, the All-Merciful will grant them His love." (Surah Maryam, 19:96). Faith and sincere action attract not only Allah's mercy, but also the affection He places in the hearts of His creatures.
Invocation with the Name Ar-Rahmān
Allah says: "To Allah belong the most beautiful Names. Call upon Him by these Names" (7:180), and verse 17:110 specifically mentions Ar-Rahmān among the Names by which one calls upon Him. The believer may say: يَا رَحْمَٰنُ ارْحَمْنِي — "Yā Rahmān, irhamnī": "O All-Merciful, have mercy upon me." And every Basmala pronounced before an action — "Bismillāh ir-Rahmān ir-Rahīm" — is already an invocation by this blessed Name.

What is the difference between Ar-Rahmān and Ar-Rahīm?
Ar-Rahmān designates the infinite mercy that belongs to the essence of Allah and encompasses all of creation; Ar-Rahīm designates mercy in action, continuous, granted with particular favor to the believers. The two Names complement each other in the basmalah.
Can one call someone "Rahmān"?
No. The scholars are unanimous: Ar-Rahmān is an exclusive Name of Allah, just like the Name "Allah" itself. A man may be described as rahīm (merciful), but the servant will be named "'Abd ar-Rahmān" — servant of the All-Merciful —, one of the most beloved names to Allah.
Why does Surah 55 bear this Name?
Because it is entirely an enumeration of the blessings of the All-Merciful: the creation of mankind, the teaching of the Quran, the heavens, the seas, the fruits, Paradise. It celebrates Ar-Rahmān as the source of every gift.
