As-Salām (السَّلَام), "The Peace", "He Who is free from all defects and grants security", is one of the most beautiful Names of Allah. It is from this Name that the Muslim greeting derives, the name of Paradise — Dār as-Salām, the Abode of Peace — and the deepest aspiration of every heart: a peace that depends neither on circumstances nor on people, because it comes from Allah Himself.
What does As-Salām mean?
The name As-Salām comes from the Arabic root sīn-lām-mīm (س ل م), which expresses peace, integrity and preservation from all harm — the same root as the words islām and muslim. Applied to Allah, this Name designates:
- Perfection without defect : Allah is free from all imperfection, all weakness and all lack, in His essence, His attributes and His acts.
- The source of all peace : It is He who deposits serenity in hearts, security in dwellings and harmony among creatures.
- He who greets and preserves His servants : He will grant the people of Paradise His eternal greeting, and preserves them in this world from harms they do not even suspect.
As-Salām in the Quran
As a Divine Name, As-Salām appears in the famous passage of Surah Al-Hashr:
هُوَ اللَّهُ الَّذِي لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْمَلِكُ الْقُدُّوسُ السَّلَامُ الْمُؤْمِنُ الْمُهَيْمِنُ الْعَزِيزُ الْجَبَّارُ الْمُتَكَبِّرُ
« He is Allah, there is no god but Him; the Sovereign, the Holy, the Peace (As-Salām), the Trustworthy, the Overseer, the Almighty, the Irresistible, the Supremely Great. » (Surah Al-Hashr, 59:23)
Allah also calls to His abode:
وَاللَّهُ يَدْعُو إِلَىٰ دَارِ السَّلَامِ
« Allah calls to the Abode of Peace. » (Surah Yūnus, 10:25)
And in Paradise, the greeting will come from Allah Himself: « "Peace!" A Word from a Merciful Lord » (Surah Yā-Sīn, 36:58). Peace is thus the thread that connects this Name, the greeting of the believers, and their final destination.
The dhikr of the Prophet ﷺ after each prayer
At the end of each obligatory prayer, after the final greeting, the Prophet ﷺ would say: اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ السَّلَامُ وَمِنْكَ السَّلَامُ، تَبَارَكْتَ يَا ذَا الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ
« O Allah, You are Peace and from You comes peace. Blessed are You, O Possessor of majesty and generosity. » (reported by Muslim)
Five times a day, the believer thus seals his prayer with this Name: a reminder that the peace sought in the salât is only obtained through Him who is its source.
Living with As-Salām in Daily Life
1. Seeking peace at its true source
Neither wealth, nor distractions, nor the approval of others give lasting peace. The heart finds tranquility only with the One who is Peace: through prayer, dhikr, and trust in His decree. Whoever draws near to As-Salām carries serenity within, whatever external storms may come.
2. Spreading salām around you
The Prophet ﷺ said: "You will not enter Paradise until you believe, and you will not believe until you love one another. Shall I tell you something that, if you do it, will make you love each other? Spread greetings of peace among you." (reported by Muslim). To greet is to offer a promise of peace: your tongue and your hand will not harm you.
3. Being an artisan of reconciliation
To be inspired by this Name is to appease conflicts rather than kindle them: in the family, the neighborhood, the workplace. Reconciling two people is among the deeds most beloved to Allah, for it transforms peace from words into action.
Invocation with the Name As-Salām
Besides the authentic dhikr after prayer — « Allāhumma anta-s-Salām wa minka-s-salām, tabārakta yā dhā-l-jalāli wa-l-ikrām » (Muslim) — the believer can invoke by this Name, in accordance with the verse "Call upon Him by His most beautiful Names" (7:180) : « Yā Salām, bring down peace into my heart, concord in my home, and admit me into the Abode of peace. »
