Al-Khabīr (الخَبِير), "The All-Informed," "The All-Knowing," is the Name of Allah that designates His knowledge of the inward nature of things: not only what is visible, but what is hidden — the intimate realities, the secret motives, the outcome of every matter. Nothing is too deeply buried, too ancient, nor too subtle to escape Al-Khabīr.
What does Al-Khabīr mean?
The name Al-Khabīr comes from the Arabic root khā'-bā'-rā' (خ ب ر), from which comes the word khibra: expert knowledge, acquired from within. Applied to Allah, this Name designates:
- Knowledge of hidden realities: Allah knows the essence of things, their secrets and their essences, where the creature perceives only appearances.
- Knowledge of intentions: what the hearts contain — sincerity or calculation — is for Him in total clarity.
- Knowledge of outcomes: He knows what every matter will become before it even begins; His decrees rest upon this perfect knowledge.
Al-Khabīr in the Qur'an
Allah says:
أَلَا يَعْلَمُ مَنْ خَلَقَ وَهُوَ اللَّطِيفُ الْخَبِيرُ
« Does He not know, He who created, while He is the Subtle, the All-Knowing? » (Surah Al-Mulk, 67:14)
And also:
وَلَا يُنَبِّئُكَ مِثْلُ خَبِيرٍ
« None can inform you like the All-Knowing. » (Surah Fātir, 35:14)
The first verse presents a luminous argument: He who shaped the hearts, could He be ignorant of what they whisper? The second draws a boundary: all human sources of information are partial; only the knowledge that comes from Allah — His revelation — tells reality as it is. The Qur'an often associates this Name with Al-Latīf (the Subtle) and Al-'Alīm (the All-Knowing): « Allah is indeed All-Knowing and All-Aware » (Surah Al-Hujurāt, 49:13).
Living with Al-Khabīr Daily
1. Caring for the Inner Self More Than Appearance
People judge by what they see; Al-Khabīr knows what you truly are. Living with this Name means working on sincerity of intention (ikhlās): praying, giving, and working for Allah first, not for the gaze of creation.
2. Accepting Divine Decrees with Trust
When one door closes, the believer remembers that the decision comes from the One who knows the outcomes. What is denied to us is denied with full knowledge of what would have harmed us; this is the peace of the heart in the face of destiny.
3. Examining Oneself Before Being Examined
Since nothing escapes Al-Khabīr, the believer develops the habit of muhāsaba: a moment each evening to review one's words and deeds, repent, and correct oneself — before the Day when secrets will be revealed.
Invocation with the Name Al-Khabīr
Allah says: "To Allah belong the most beautiful Names. Call upon Him by these Names" (7:180). One can say: "Yā Khabīr, anta a'lamu bi-hālī minnī — fa-dabbir lī amrī" — "O All-Knowing, You know my state better than I know myself: arrange my affairs for me." To entrust to Allah in this way what one does not know how to express is one of the sweetest fruits of this Name: He has no need of our explanations to know our need.

Al-'Alīm designates divine knowledge in all its extent: Allah knows all things. Al-Khabīr emphasizes its depth: He knows the inner nature of things, their hidden realities and their outcomes. Allah's knowledge is both total and intimate.
Why is Al-Khabīr often associated with Al-Latīf?
Because the two Names complement each other: Al-Latīf perceives the infinitely subtle and acts with gentleness, Al-Khabīr knows the infinitely hidden. Together — as in verse 67:14 — they describe a Lord whose goodness is never blind: He treats us according to a perfect knowledge of what we are.
What does faith in Al-Khabīr change in the life of the believer?
